en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_roll but here is information on the Reproducing Piano (TM) much more expensive!!!! Rolls for the reproducing piano were generally made from the recorded performances of famous musicians. Typically, a pianist would sit at a specially designed recording piano, and the pitch and duration of any notes played would be either marked or perforated on a blank roll, together with the duration of the sustaining and soft pedal. In Australia Edith and Laurel Pardey were employed as "nine to five" pianola pianists. They were not famous when they started in the 1920s but they became well known for their playing.[7] Reproducing pianos can also re-create the dynamics of a pianist's performance by means of specially encoded control perforations placed towards the edges of a music roll. Different companies had different ways of notating dynamics, some technically advanced, some secret, and some dependent entirely on a recording producer's handwritten notes, but in all cases these dynamic hieroglyphics had to be skillfully converted into the specialized perforated codes needed by the different types of instrument. Recorded rolls play at a specific, marked speed, where for example, 70 signifies 7 feet (2.1 m) of paper travel in one minute, at the start of the roll. On all pneumatic player pianos, the paper is pulled on to a take-up spool, and as more paper winds on, so the effective diameter of the spool increases, and with it the paper speed. Player piano engineers were well aware of this, as can be seen from many patents of the time, but since reproducing piano recordings were generally made with a similar take-up spool drive, the tempo of the recorded performance is faithfully reproduced, despite the gradually increasing paper speed. The playing of many pianists and composers is preserved on reproducing piano roll. Gustav Mahler, Camille Saint-Saëns, Edvard Grieg, Teresa Carreño, Claude Debussy, Manuel de Falla, Scott Joplin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, Alexander Scriabin, Jelly Roll Morton and George Gershwin are amongst the composers and pianists who have had their performances recorded in this way. Duo-Art featured artists such as Ignace Jan Paderewski, George Gershwin, Maurice Ravel, Teresa Carreño, Percy Grainger, Leopold Godowsky and Ferruccio Busoni. The Ampico brand's featured artists included Sergei Rachmaninoff, Ferde Grofé, Leo Ornstein, Mischa Levitzki, Winifred MacBride, and Marguerite Volavy. Welte-Mignon, the earliest reproducing system, recorded artists such as Gustav Mahler, Camille Saint-Saëns, Claude Debussy, Manuel de Falla, Alexander Scriabin, Enrique Granados, Eugen d'Albert, Josef Lhévinne, Raoul Pugno, and Carl Reinecke (who was the earliest-born pianist to record in any media format).

I have been exposed to Jeff from the beginning of his playing career. I remember back in the 60’s he was the go-to man if any of the British players would be stuck trying to invent a lead part for a song. Jeff was constantly inventing new ideas and styles for the 6 string electric. I personally have never seen him play anything other than his 6 string electric. Mostly Fender or a Fender copy by Vantage. All guitarists should spend time studying his style, in my opinion. Jeff plays ‘outside’, a term familiar to jazz players but not so much R&R players. Playing ‘outside’ is the term used to describe playing a pitch that is outside of the key that the song is in. For example, playing the f natural in the key of Em (E minor). The f natural is not in the key of Em, but it can be played as an effect by those who know and understand music theory. I must disagree with the numerous, so called guitar teachers who preach that: “You don’t need to study or understand music theory in order to play the guitar”. Really! that is what you teach your students? Give me a break pilgrim. So you are just stuck in the pentatonic system with no variety of scales, are you now. I would wager that you couldn’t play an 11th chord if your life depended on it, much less a ‘#11th’ or a ‘b11th’😂. firstKade

Jeff Beck has always been God to me. I have played lead guitar in bands for 40 yrs and picked up some of the things he used to do. However, he is a magician that no one can emulate. So original and iconic. He rips that guitar from pure beauty to violent sounds that no one can seem to achieve. The day I heard of his untimely departure shattered me to the core.

Chromedreamer... { Whoever you are } Thank you Sooo much for keeping Jeff's INCREDIBLE Way ((Playing the guitar)) ALIVE !! It allways was, & WILL BE, For Decades to come. Working the trem, With such subtlely, Essentially making the guitar Sound as close as possible to the human voice as possible. For a couple years, When I was a young chap, I Learned that subtlety. But I went through Sooo many "Regular" Strat's. Now called Vintage... I can't believe the age I am. Somehow I still have all my natural hair. I DON'T Die it ! { If I see one or two Grey's, I pull those bastard's OUT !!! & They hobble back to their UFO's Completely freaked out !! Hey... I'm Kidding !! (Not about the couple of Grey hairs a month...) Anyhow, Sometimes playing multiple versions of the same Beck Sonic excursion, Is GREAT !!! { Not soo much in this case } Please don't take my honesty wrong. I ALLWAYS look forward to ALL your post. Most often, Jeff would improvise as much as he could. But sadly he { & I } discovered 90% of non musicians EXPECT the "Album version." Oh well. Having met & spent ( Short but productive time W/ Jeff.) On stage, He is/Was. Actually HOLDING BACK !! .... SERIOUSLY !!! Sorry for the Long post !

Most don't realize what a massive loss Jeff is to the music world and i fear this is a generational thing as i see no guitarists of these past 2 generations coming up the ranks with the same skills. Maybe Jeff is a once in a lifetime phenomenon, he surely deserves that label, but the music scene sorely needs to get back to grass roots i.e. the four piece band instead of this manufactured shite we have today, it's all kiddie pop imho. Anyway back to this sublime footage, the only guitarist missing here in my opinion is Jimmy Page, what a trio that would've been, Beck, Gilmore and page,oh my lord!! R.I.P.
